NEW YORK METRO FOCUSING
Meeting on Sunday evening January 22, 2017
NY Metro Focusing meetings offer an opportunity to engage in a felt sensing, interactive exploration of topics of interest. We value diversity and welcome everyone’s voice. Our conversational process encourages slowing down, listening from a felt sensing place, and letting what we hear resonate within to bring something new and fresh, both within ourselves and within the group.
Program: WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER:
Exploring Ways Compassion for Ourselves and Others Might Help Us in These Changing, Uncertain Times.
Facilitated by Calliope Callias
At the Heart of Focusing lies Compassion: Compassion for our inner little ones, Compassion for our fellow life travelers, Compassion for the life we are.
In a world that is changing rapidly in unpredictable ways, can Focusing and the Focusing community help us retain and even cultivate Compassion? Can Compassion be an antidote to fear and hate? Are there Compassionate ways to voice our objections, disagreements, or protests?
Positive Psychology and Mindfulness provide us with theory and research which support the idea that treating ourselves Compassionately can lead to more Compassion for others. What is Self-Compassion and what is it not? What are its benefits? In what ways can Self-Compassion help us in uncertain times?
In this Focusing conversation we will explore the definition and nature of Compassion and Self-Compassion and the ways available to us for cultivating them. We will look at some of the above questions, as well as some of the theories and research. We will also practice an exercise which combines Focusing, Positive Psychology, Mindfulness and other Spiritual practices and is designed to help us cultivate Compassion for ourselves, the other and the world.
This evening’s facilitator: Calliope Callias, PhD is a clinical psychologist in private practice in New York City, a certified Focusing-Oriented Therapist/Trainer, a Focusing Coordinator in Training, and a certified practitioner of Applied Positive Psychology. She is also an adjunct clinical professor of psychology at Adelphi University. Her interests include teaching Focusing for community wellness, and supporting research in Focusing. Currently she is exploring ways to cultivate Compassion and Self Compassion by combining Focusing with other practices.
